Rebecca
A series of 180 drawings inspired by Hitchcock’s Rebecca (1940), translating cinematic moments into story-driven, film-inspired illustration. Using pen and ink I explore mood, tension, character, and narrative, capturing the psychological and atmospheric world of the film. This work reflects my practice in observational, narrative illustration and visual storytelling, showing how cinematic inspiration can inform detailed, evocative illustration for both fiction and non-fiction contexts.
Birds
My bird sketches are drawn from the live cameras on BBC Springwatch, using fast, instinctive drawing to explore nature through time and observation. Working in ink, charcoal, coloured pencil, and pastels, I focus on gesture, behaviour, and character rather than detail. These quick studies capture small unfolding narratives and inform my natural history, science and nature, and narrative non-fiction illustration practice.
Entomology & Life Sciences
These illustrations are drawn from life from the Hope Entomological and Life sciences collections at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. With a stereo microscope, I captured fine details the naked eye cannot see, bringing new depth and precision to my natural history illustration.
Botanical
My botanical illustrations are based on real specimens collected during walks, from my own garden and my pond. Working directly from these plants, I record their structure, form, and small details. Through careful observation, these hand-drawn, curiosity-driven illustrations explore nature, gardens, and discovery, forming part of my wildlife and nature illustration.
The Endurance – Shackleton
My illustrations of the Endurance expedition focus on the emotional power of the sea and the true story of survival at the heart of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic journey. Inspired by historical figures and the spirit of exploration, I create non-fiction illustrations that bring real events to life. Through studies of the ship Endurance, shifting polar ice, and vast, hostile landscapes, I aim to communicate themes of endurance, leadership, and human determination, making complex historical narratives accessible and engaging for children’s books and educational storytelling.
